I'm sure that conclusive proof that an executed prisoner was indeed
innocent would both make the papers and the relevant lawyers' and
reporters' careers.

If it was conclusive, it would not be confined to an advocacy site.
relatives and friends are all too willing (and I would wager more so than
cops who do not know the person in question as well) to lie and
fabricate evidence, especially after the execution of the person in
question, perhaps 'for the children' of the murderer.
